"My wife and I chose to mark my coming of (old) age by going on safari in South Africa. Never having seen this alluring continent before, we were eager to see its big game, the amazing diversity of birds and plants and Africa's immense landscapes while it was still possible. But how to do this despite my wheelchair and limited mobility?
Enter the enterprising Alfie Smith who, with his wife and considerable experience of leading ordinary tours in Africa's parks, founded their own company Epic Enabled, which caters expressly for the disabled traveller. 'Yes, you CAN join these tours - No boundaries' goes their slogan when offering a choice of tours including Cape Town's Garden Route, Botswana and the world-famous Kruger National Park.
Normally a group is transported in a high truck with viewing windows and a wheelchair lift; but as we were the only takers on this 8 day safari through the Kruger, Alfie took us in a Mercedes van. He not only drove and guided us but catered at our various camps and helped physically with baggage and transfers. My wife could concentrate on her photography. We were taken on morning and evening game drives through the lush scenery and saw all the Big Five mammals and much more - all in the comfortable warmth of the African summer. Look at www.epic-enabled.com and you will see what else is included in an exciting and carefree week. I wager you would be captivated by the indefinable magic of wild Africa."
